When Negro History Week was established by Carter Woodson in 1926, intense systemic racism, income inequality, deeply entrenched segregation, and high levels of violence against Black Americans were all part . Today, in 2026, after decades of progress, we’re witnessing a recommitment to systemic racism, income inequality, segregation by race and class are becoming more common, and there is still violence against Black and Brown Americans. And we’re not supposed to talk about it.
This Black History Month, I invite you to not just consume content, but to also provide material support to organizations that preserve our history and support economic self-determination. Here are a few:
The Iowa Black History Research Collective (because, duh): The Iowa Black History Research Collective is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating in the state of Iowa. Established in 2021, our mission is to identify Black churches that might be good candidates for historic recognition and facilitate paid research opportunities for college students. Our end goal is to accumulate sufficient narrative to suggest/submit churches for historic recognition. The Iowa Black History Research Collective is committed to keeping Black History accessible in Central Iowa while centering the lived experience of Black people.

Bettering Youth Organization: At Bettering Youth Organization (BYO) and the Bettering Youth Legends of Luminaries Cultural Museum (BYLLCM), we are committed to shaping the future by bringing people together and serving as an educational outlet for artistic, musical, cultural, and historical channels. Founded in 2009 by Norris Hildreth in Chicago, Illinois, BYO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth and ensuring that the rich legacy of Black Americans in Iowa and beyond is recognized, preserved, and celebrated.

SistaSoulFest: SistaSoulFest (SSF) is Iowa’s largest (and only) Black women led vendor festival. SSF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes community and opportunity for women, girls, and historically excluded groups.
